I love new beginnings. Whether it is a new season, a new book or the new year! Fresh start. Something to look back on and see what can be improved and what can be discovered in the year to come. Working as a mosaic artist and teacher, there is always room for discovery and growth. I am passionate about what I do and as a mosaic art teacher I love sharing it with new and experienced students. Mosaic art is having such a renaissance and so many artists are creating in new and unique styles. I love watching the evolution of a new student that has taken their first workshop and how their right brain starts to really click with new and inspiring ideas. The possibilities are limitless!!! Here’s to a limitless 2015 for all mosaics and the artists creating them!!!

Today I am going over the schedule and getting some feedback from students for upcoming workshops. I am always open to learning about what the students here at SBSMA would like to learn. There are so many styles of mosaic art. There are incredible teachers from all over the world that have and will come teach here at SBSMA. I consider this school a boutique style school. Meaning workshops can be altered and custom designed to meet students needs. Nothing is set in stone here and the main goal is each student that comes to Santa Barbara School of Mosaic Art has a great experience learning new techniques and skills to take into their mosaic practice….so please feel free to email me email@example.com and let me know what attracts you to mosaics and what you would like to learn!!
I am here to tell you about all the latest happenings at Santa Barbara School of Mosaic Art.
Santa Barbara School of Mosaic Art offers great mosaic workshops, open studio time better known as LAB and incredible visiting artists.
There is also the Todos Santos Mosaic Art Retreat. The next retreat departs December 7th-13th, for the trip of a lifetime. Incredible food, great shopping and of course creative mosaic expression.
Working in mosaic art can be a very therapeutic experience and it is a great way to give yourself a chance to create something even if you have little to no experience. Contact Tami at 805.703.4291 to set up your time to come to SBSMA~

Today is the final day of the Kelley Knickerbocker Strata Various workshop. What a great success. Each student made their own sample boards. Learning to work with tinted mortar and self made mesh/mortar substrates. Students worked quickly to create the substrates that they would then create sample boards using only black/white tesserae in a variety of materials. Learning to cut different textures, working with setting them to create a conversation between the tesserae and the space between them. Here are 2 unedited quick videos of Kelley explaining how the different shapes can be set and why! I highly recommend this workshop and anything else Kelley has to offer. She is a valuable wealth of knowledge and incredible talent in our mosaic community
Our Mexican Smalti workshop took place last weekend. Every student worked on the same flower design while learning the processes of proper cutting and fitting skills.
Everyone left with the knowledge of color gradation, shading and color values. It was a fantastic two full days of hands on learning!
Learning to work on a 3D object can be fun and a little challenging at the same time. The results will be so gratifying when you see the sparkle and reflection of glass from so many angles.
Our students use found objects, tile, mirror, and pottery to create a one of a kind object of beauty. You will work directly with Teacher and Owner Tami Macala as she takes you through the process of creation including design layout, setting tesserae, and a grouting lesson. You will leave with a beautiful, creative, and functional piece of art for your garden or home. Check our website schedule for upcoming classes!
Visiting artist Carol Shelkin taught at The Santa Barbara School of Mosaic Art last August, and we are so lucky to have her back!
She had such a great experience with our students last summer, that she decided to return. The Realistic Mosaic Art in Stained Glass Workshop on April 6th and 7th is filling up quickly! Carol is so skilled at teaching, that the skills you will learn in this workshop will equal what you would learn in a semester of art school. Carol uses powerpoint lectures, hands-on attention, and feedback for each student. Every student will leave with greater knowledge of many artistic elements which will be used in any art medium they choose.

Lightweight concrete small boulders and spheres are taking shape and ready to become amazing works of art in our upcoming workshop and for sale! Teacher and Owner, Tami Macala makes the boulders and spheres, and you make the art! The Garden Sphere/Boulder Workshop gives students the opportunity to use the concrete boulders and spheres as the “canvas” for this three dimensional art. In the workshop, we will use tile, pottery, found objects and mirror pieces to make art for indoors or out! Teacher and owner Tami Macala will guide students through the process including design, setting tesserae, and a grouting lesson. Contact Tami for more information.
We are so excited about the projects we are working on, and the upcoming opportunities for new learning. If you have not already, please check out our calendar of classes. You can find it here: http://santabarbaraschoolofmosaicart.com/sbsma-schedule/
All levels of students are welcome at SBSMA! Start 2013 learning some new skills. Our beginner workshops are for the novice and for anyone wanting to brush up on their mosaic skills. Everyone leaves with a tiled piece of mosaic art they created by the end of the class!
