MOSAIC TEXTURES
with visiting artist Margo Anton
June 15th, 16th & 17th
Fri. 6p-8p
Sat. & Sun. 10p-4p

When making a mosaic sometimes texture is the best part about it.  In this new and exciting workshop visiting artist Margo Anton teaches a variety of ways to use the design element of texture in a mosaic.
On Friday evening the workshop will begin with a lecture and presentation on the many ways to create texture.  Then over the next two days students will work on two mosaics providing an opportunity to try out at least two texture concepts in their work.  Inspiration for these mosaics will be taken from  photographs either provided by Margo or you may bring your own if they are suitable .  Original work is encouraged too.
These ungrouted mosaics will be created using thinset, on 8″x8″ or 8′x10″ substrates. A limited palette will be used, encouraging the focus on texture and tone to create the mosaic.  The materials used in this course will be smalti, marble, stained glass, vitreous glass and more.  Use of hammer and hardie will be covered.
All materials are provided in the materials fee, but students are welcome to bring items that can supplement and support their design.  Students will leave this workshop with a good understanding of the ways to incorporate texture into mosaic art.
Fee $260
Materials $50

RADICAL DIMENSIONS IN GLASS MOSAIC

with visiting artist Kelley Knickerbocker
June 29, 30 & July 1
Fri. 6p-8p
Sat. & Sun. 10-4

In this amazing workshop of lecture/slide show, cutting/setting demos, and lots of hands-on practice,  Kelley will confidently share her expertise of “extreme sport” variations of ungrouted glass-on-glass mosaic:
Flat Stacking, in which differing opacity of stained glass are adhered in layers to a mirror substrate to explore the luminous light diffusion, color blending and unique 3-D background/foreground effect only layers can produce; and Edge Stacking, in which stained glass strips of diverse heights/lengths are stacked on edge to showcase the light-handling properties of the riven edge and to create dramatic dimensional contrasts with surrounding elements.
In addition, we will investigate the benefits of combining glass with contrasting materials. Students will learn to cut and set an unglazed porcelain background to complement their stacked glass mosaic elements.
Students will gain understanding and proficiency by creating a small mosaic incorporating all the techniques and materials.
Additional topics covered: designing for these techniques, efficient cutting and setting tips for both glass and porcelain, an intro to UV-curing adhesives, using mirror as a substrate, framing, and appropriate adhesives, tools, and applications.
All supplies and materials will be provided, but students may supplement if desired from their own inventories or by purchasing additional glass at SBSMA Supply store.
Students should plan to bring an exacto knife and a Sharpie.
This workshop will be of greatest benefit to artists who have worked in glass but are looking for ways to “push the envelope” in how glass can be used in mosaics.
Basic proficiency with a standard glass cutter and straightedge is critical to getting the most out of this workshop, and unfortunately there’s just not time to teach it during the workshop. A good understanding of basic mosaic principles and vocabulary will also be helpful.
Fee $300
Materials $50
