June 2014
Summer, Summer, Summer!!! Those of you that do know me, this is my favorite time of year!  I love it all!!  Hot days, BBQ with friends and teaching and creating mosaic art all while working in the outdoor studio!
Fun and creative workshops have been added to the schedule for this summer….both weekdays and weekends.  Scroll down to check them out!
Another favorite part is inviting east coast artists to teach here while we have such great weather.  On that note….I cannot express enough the excitement for SBSMA’s next visiting artist.
CAROL SHELKIN….if you have not heard of her then here is a link to her work.
Carol teaches in such a relaxed and educationally expanding way. You will be amazed at the amount of information you absorb and what you will be able to do to incorporate all of this into YOUR mosaic art!
Here is a link to the schedule page for more details.
There are a few spaces left so I would not wait!  Email or call for more details or to sign up….805.703.4291.

SANTA BARBARA SCHOOL OF MOSAIC ART

April 2014
The line “time flies” has never meant more than a couple weeks ago when myself and seven lovely students arrived in Todos Santos, Mexico for the first SBSMA Todos Santos Mosaic Art Retreat.
I don’t remember the last time a week went by so fast.  It was a blissful week filled with colorful mosaic art, incredibly fresh and delicious food made with love every time by our own chef Iker Algorri and the wonderful ocean with the waves breaking right below us.  And yes a few whales swam by and flapped their very large fins at us!
If all that sounds too incredible trust me it was!!  Each student created their own special sun (pictures below) using sentimental items as well as colorful beads, baubles and gems.  We tinted our mortar as well as our grout and edged off the sun rays with mirror for extra light reflection.
There are so many stories to tell and I could go on for hours.  Our group was so harmonious , we met wonderful artists at their homes and galleries and the incredible service we received from Sergio and Bryan of Los Colibris, the small boutique hotel where the retreat was held.
The only thing I can say is the next SBSMA Mosaic Art Retreat dates are set for OCTOBER 12TH -18TH  & DECEMBER 7TH-13TH, 2014…if you are interested feel free to click here to email for more details.   You can chose from either of these dates and we will create the 3D Sun Mosaics.  There is a minimum space for 6 and maximum for 10.  Many have showed interest so I would not wait.  Click here for details about these dates.

SBSMA is introducing it’s first evening series workshop.  It will be a Garden Sphere/Boulder workshop.  Tuesday evenings from 6p-9p May 13th, 20th, 27th and June 3rd.  There is also more LAB time and lots of private parties.

SANTA BARBARA SCHOOL OF MOSAIC ART

March 2014
Here is it the first week of March.  I feel spring coming right around the corner.  More light during our days and more and more warm weather, not that we have suffered, like our friends to the east and north.  We did finally get some much needed rain, which leads right into my next paragraph.

The wonderful and amazingly creative Kelley Knickerbocker returned this past weekend to a SOLD OUT workshop.  This group of very enthusiastic and passionate students created amazing works as well as rolled with some incredible weather punches.  Santa Barbara experienced pretty much it’s entire rainy season in two days.  We had a different location each day but that did not stop this group from learning new techniques working with beads, baubles and textured clear glass on a mirror substrate, as well as grouting with epoxy grout.  This group accomplished so much this weekend and had a great time doing it.  Kelley will return in the fall with another new and exciting workshop she calls “Strata Various”click here for details.  See pictures below from this weekends workshop.
Have you ever wanted to learn how the classical masters created mosaics back 2000+years ago?  Do you enjoy working in more traditional materials, such as marble, stone and smalti glass?  Would you like to learn how to in three days with someone that has mastered these skills?  Then next month’s (April 10-12) Classical Direct Method-3 day intensive is for you!
This will be an incredible workshop.  Taught by Michael Kruzich, who has been to Ravenna, Italy almost a half a dozen times to study with Luciana Notturni at the Mosaic Art School.  He has her blessing to bring back her teachings and share them with lucky students like us.  Each student will leave with a very thorough knowledge of using a hammer and hardie as well as working in this classical mosaic technique while using the traditional materials.  Click here for more details regarding this workshop.
SBSMA is now selling liquid tints for all your tinting needs. Using a small amount of these tints can give you a high saturation level on both your thin set and grout.  These tints are being highly regarded by many of the teachers teaching here at SBSMA.  If you are interested please email or call.  They come in 9 colors and are $10.50/2oz bottle.
Lastly, the Todos Santos Mosaic Art Retreat is SOLD OUT.   I look forward to sharing this incredible spot with these students and returning with lots of stories and pictures to share.  Once we return dates for the next one will be set, so don’t fret we will go again!

Have a great March and hope to see you soon at SBSMA!

“MOSAIC PARTY”

7 friends came together for a fun 3 hour get together just to hang out and create mosaic art.  In that short but busy time they chose their colors and design and began nipping.  They used stained glass on 7″x7″ boards to create their fun and unique pieces.  They all went home with their own piece of mosaic art.

If you would like to get a group of your friends together for a birthday party, bachelorette party or just for a fun and creative time, email Tami for details.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
I love to say that….happy new year!  There is always the feeling of a fresh start and a positive outlook on a year to come.
This year has so much in store for SBSMA.  Keep your eyes peeled every month as new visiting artists are being added, new workshops including creating on 3D objects and a few of our favorite visiting teachers will return.

Coming up in February SBSMA welcomes back Erin Pankratz-Smtih for her new “Gradation” workshop.  This is an awesome opportunity to work with one of the best mosaic artists working in color and gradation.  This workshop will be held February 22nd & 23rd.
Last but not least SBSMA is excited to introduce the newest visiting artist to SBSMA.  Michael Kruzich will teach his classical mosaic techniques from his travels and many intensive hours at the Mosaic Art School in Ravenna, Italy.
