Starting the New Year here at SBSMA

I love new beginnings.  Whether it is a new season, a new book or the new year!  Fresh start.  Something to look back on and see what can be improved and what can be discovered in the year to come.  Working as a mosaic artist and teacher, there is always room for discovery and growth.  I am passionate about what I do and as a mosaic art teacher I love sharing it with new and experienced students.  Mosaic art is having such a renaissance and so many artists are creating in new and unique styles.  I love watching the evolution of a new student that has taken their first workshop and how their right brain starts to really click with new and inspiring ideas.  The possibilities are limitless!!!   Here’s to a limitless 2015 for all mosaics and the artists creating them!!!

2014 Mosaic Art Retreat Todos Santos: Santa Barbara School of Mosaic Art

Santa Barbara School of Mosaic Art
Retreat in Todos Santos, Mexico!
October 12th-18th, 2014

This email is to announce the second SBSMA Todos Santos Mosaic Art Retreat.  For those of you that may not know we are adventuring back to the magical town of Todos Santos.  After having such an incredible time back in March we decided there may be some folks that missed our first trip and would love to experience this amazing place.

Many people have shown serious interest and are ready to book their tickets, so I want to give everyone has a chance to read all about this wonderful retreat before starting registration.  If these dates do not work we are booked to go
December 7th-13th,2014 as well.  It will be the same style as this one creating the 3D Sun.

Now imagine creating art with spectacular ocean views to inspire you, beautiful gardens and pools to relax you, and a personal chef to prepare gourmet meals to sustain you. This is just the beginning of the Todos Santos mosaic art retreat.

You will spend one full week creating mosaic art in one of the most creative and peaceful settings on the Baja Peninsula, the pueblo magico of Todos Santos. The accommodations for this retreat will be at the beautiful boutique hotel, Los Colibris Casitas. Los Colibris has 4 wonderfully inviting casitas, each with comfortable beds, great bathrooms and private patios from which you can enjoy the amazing scenery and ocean views. The infinity pool and hot tub are great for star gazing and observing the humpback and grey whales that are often visitors at this time of year.

During this mosaic art retreat each participant will work on a flat 3D shape, using your own found objects, sentimental pieces, milliefiori, mirror and stained glass. We will learn how to work with tinted mortar/thin set and grout. Participants will also learn how to embed the colorful pieces into the mortar to create a color gradation while not using grout. Grout will be used on the edges of the piece which we will learn how to tint as well. Once mastered, this process is easy to reproduce at home.

Todos Santos is an artist colony on the Tropic of Cancer, just one hour north of Cabo San Lucas, but an entire world away. Nestled next to 70 miles of pristine, undeveloped beach, Todos Santos is famous for the remarkable quality of its light, which drew the first American artists from Taos in the 1980s. Since then artists of all stripes and nationalities have populated the town, which is a charming reflection of their passions with wonderful restaurants, art galleries, and shops. The people of Todos Santos are warm and welcoming, and love sharing the pleasures of their hometown with visitors. The beaches of nearby Pescadero and Cerritos are added bonuses.

This retreat SOLD OUT in March and the attendance for this retreat will be a maximum of 8.

Retreat Price:  $1,699.00 (based on double occupancy).

Price includes:

  • Airport transfer on arrival and departure (within time frames)
  • 6 nights lodging at Los Colibris
  • Sunday evening welcome reception
  • 5 full breakfasts & 5 lunches pool side by local chef Iker
  • Refreshing agua fresca throughout the work day
  • Evening transportation into town
  • Partial materials for mosaic piece

Instruction: 5 days from 10a-2p.  More work time will be available if desired.

SANTA BARBARA SCHOOL OF MOSAIC ART

December 2014
Here at SBSMA we are looking back and looking forward all at the same time as we celebrate 5 years!  It feels like an incredible accomplishment and so excited to move forward into the next 5 years!!
It has been such a wonderful experience to be both the teacher and artist here at SBSMA.  I feel very grateful to call my passion my job, and so fortunate to be able to share it with my clients.  Here is a little excerpt from a client’s blog about one of the commissions I created for her….
The sun below is very near and dear to me!!! It was made by a local woman artist named Tami. She has been a friend of the family for years!!! That makes it pretty special BUT That the real reason it is very special is because it was given to me by my family, the dear friends that I work with!!! Each person contributed to it. It was a thrill to receive and a joy to look at!!! I love it so much!!! It is made with special pieces of glass, random trinkets, mementos and a special lapel pin from grandmother. I was so touched! So thrilled! So happy!! It is beyond BEYOND! I thank each and everyone of them for making it and making me feel special every time I look at it!!!! And to Tami too!!! Xo
Just a few weeks ago SBSMA hosted Carol Shelkin for a wonderful Stained Glass Portraiture mosaic workshop.  She lead a great group of students through the steps in teaching them about value, shading and tone all while creating a mosaic.  I often say Carol teaches an entire semester of art in two days…..Always worth it….Looking forward to her visit again next year!
December has two more workshops before the year is up!
Sunday December 7th is Wine & Mosaics, hosted at the wonderful winery Casa Dumetz Wines in Los Alamos.  1p-4p, $40/person.  Each participant will create a 6″x 6″ trivet using the ever so vibrant Mexican Smalti glass tiles.
Sunday December 14th is the Holiday Ornament workshop.  Using light weight Wedi board as our shapes and creating the mosaic with beads, baubles, millefiori and glass each student will make 1-2 ornaments.  We will create these one of kind mosaics using the pastry bag method and embedding.   Once again having fun, learning new techniques and creating mosaic art!
AND NOW……….
If you are looking more into 2015 for a fun and exciting workshop, look no further than Sharra Frank and The Secrets of Mosaicking with Beads, January 10th&11th.  Who wouldn’t want to be in a workshop that gives out secrets????  Here is your chance, click here for more details!
A few more workshops to consider as the NEW year gets started!!

SANTA BARBARA SCHOOL OF MOSAIC ART

November 2014
They say time flies when you are having fun.  I am here to say yes that is so true.  Where has 2014 gone?  Here we are in the last two months of the year and I feel like we are just getting started.  It has been so wonderful to have new and returning students come experience the creative and relaxing space here at SBSMA.
The universal theme that seems to be resonating here is ‘doing something for myself’.  More and more people are realizing with our busy lives and schedules we need to take time for ourselves.  Creating art is one of the best ways to give  yourself that space and leave the chaos of life behind, even for just a few hours.   SBSMA is nestled between the pacific ocean and the Santa Ynez wine country.  There is no better place to let go of that left brain for a little while and let the right side be free.  Free to create, relax and just be.
On that note, the amazingly talented and ever so fun Kelley Knickerbocker made her third appearance here at SBSMA teaching the workshop “Strata Various”.   In one evening and two days she took her students through the process of creating a sample board, using only black, white and gray mortars as well as only black and white tesserae.  She taught how to create a substrate with mortar and mesh. And she put her signature talents on how the space between our tesserae is as important as the tess itself.  ONCE AGAIN Kelley Knickerbocker thank you….you are a great talent to have in our mosaic community!
In a few days we will have the great pleasure of hosting Carol Shelkin and her Stained Glass Portraiture mosaic art workshop.  There are two spots left, so if you are still considering it I would not wait.  November 13th&14th, 10a-5p.
Lastly for the this month we will have the talented Betsy Gallery here to teach 3 Day Classical Techniques and Tools.  This a great introduction on how to create a mosaic using all the traditional tools, techniques and styles of old days to present.
November 21st-23rd, 10a-5p.
If you are looking more into 2015 for a fun and exciting workshop, look no further than Sharra Frank and The Secrets to Mosaicking with Beads, January 10th&11th.  Who wouldn’t want to be in a workshop that gives out secrets????  Here is your chance, click here for more details!
Have a great NOVEMBER and hope to see you soon at SBSMA!

SANTA BARBARA SCHOOL OF MOSAIC ART

October 2014
Mosaics, mosaics, mosaics!!!!  That is what we create here SBSMA and all  over the world!!  The art of mosaic has quite a history and it is incredible the renaissance it has also had over the last 20 years or so!

Here at SBSMA we like to celebrate all of it.
~There are world renown visiting artists/teachers that share their skills and techniques so each student can evolve as a better mosaic artist.
~ There is open studio time, aka LAB, where students can spend time in the studio and be guided when necessary, to better their cutting skills, color choices or any other questions they may have.
~ There are workshops taught by Tami, such as Table Top or Garden Sphere where a complete novice can create a piece and be proud of it and enjoy in their home or garden.

Experience is everything so whether students create mosaics as a hobby or a business, it is my passion here at SBSMA to create the best environment to learn, create and explore!

The Todos Santos Mosaic Art Retreat departs December 7th-13th, for the trip of a lifetime.  Incredible food, great shopping and of course creative mosaic expression.

Working in mosaic art can be a very therapeutic experience and it is a great way to give yourself a chance to create something even if you have little to no experience while listening to the waves crash below you and a warm breeze blowing!

If you missed this fabulously spirited retreat last winter, please join us December 7 – 13, 2014. Join Tami Macala in Todos Santos, Mexico  for a lot of sea, a lot of sand, and a riot of color.

Mosaic Workshop MexicoImagine creating art with spectacular ocean views to inspire you, beautiful gardens and pools to relax you, and a personal chef to prepare gourmet meals to sustain you. This is just the beginning of the Todos Santos mosaic art retreat.

You’ll spend one full week creating mosaic art in one of the most creative and peaceful settings on the Baja Peninsula, the pueblo magico of Todos Santos.

Mosaic Workshop MexicoDuring this mosaic art retreat each participant will work on a flat 3D shape, using your own found objects, sentimental pieces, millefiori, mirror and stained glass. We’ll learn how to work with tinted mortar/thinset and grout. Participants will also learn how to embed the colorful pieces into the mortar to create a color gradation while not using grout. Grout will be used on the edges of the piece, and we’ll learn to tint that as well. Once mastered, this process is easy to reproduce at home.

Last but not least this month and November will bring three incredibly talented and wonderful visiting artists back to SBSMA.

First, we have Kelley Knickerbocker teaching her newly designed workshop “Strata Various” Oct. 24-26.  She will be diving into a whole new world of techniques and sharing how to create work with intention on space and tesserae.
Second, we will have Carol Shelkin and her “Portraiture” workshop Nov. 13th&14th.  Carol returns to SBSMA to share her talents on how to create a stained glass mosaic portrait using her specific style and amazing techniques.
Third, we have Betsy Gallery and her “3 Day Intensive, Classic Mosaic Techniques, Materials and Tools” Nov. 21st-23rd.  Students will get hands on experience working with the traditional materials and tools used in the classic mosaics from centuries ago up to present day.

SANTA BARBARA SCHOOL OF MOSAIC ART

September 2014
Here we are heading into the end of summer for most of the country, yet the beauty of living here in southern California is we have most often an Indian summer.  The days stay warm and the nights get a little cooler, but still plenty of time to work outside, paddle board at my favorite spots and enjoy outdoor living.   The workshops here at SBSMA are busy as ever and we are all enjoying the wonderful ocean breezes blowing through here.
On that note we have many great workshops coming up this month.  The Pique Assiette “broken plates” workshop is filling up, Sept. 13/14.  It is a great opportunity to work with personal objects that can be interspersed with broken china, crockery and other great finds.  This style is created around a small mirror to allow for the final product to be a functional piece of hanging art.  Beginners welcome!
We also have Intro to Glass Fusing.  Learning to glass fuse small pieces on day one then incorporating those pieces into a mosaic on day two.  It is a very informative and gratifying workshop, Sept. 18/19.  Beginners welcome!
We will end the month with the ever popular Garden Sphere/Boulder workshop.  This is a great two day hands on workshop to learn how to create a mosaic on a 3D object, Sept. 27/28.  Beginners welcome!
This is the last week to sign up for the Todos Santos, Mexico Mosaic Art Retreat, Oct. 12th-18th.  I am so excited to head back to this beautiful and mystical place.  We will be creating art while gazing out over the ocean,  practicing yoga (optional) on the outdoor yoga deck, eating fresh amazing food created by our chef Iker and listening to the waves crash as we fall asleep in comfortable and clean accommodations.  CLICK HERE FOR THE DETAILS….LAST 2 SPOTS AVAILABLE!!

SANTA BARBARA SCHOOL OF MOSAIC ART

August 2014
Someone once said to me that because SBSMA is called a “school” it should be in a proper building, or don’t call your business a “school.” We then looked up the definition and it defines “school” as “any institution at which instruction is given in a particular discipline.”
Now as most of you know I teach and run my “school” at my home studio, and while living in Santa Barbara I have the privilege on most days to teach outside in a canopy style covered space over looking our half acre which includes lush gardens, a chicken coop and other eclectic collectibles.  Our weather here is quite lovely most of the time and the house sits up on a hill with a direct line as the crow flies about a mile from the ocean, so there is most always an ocean breeze blowing through the studio.  Some days I have to say it is truly intoxicating.
Now I share this info with you not to lure you here to SBSMA (but if that description did it…GREAT) only to share that sometimes the best places to be are not in a prescribed building to share talents and teach a particular discipline but sometimes it’s right in your own backyard.
Now then, SBSMA is brimming with new workshops!  Check the schedule for a new Pique Assiette (broken plates) workshop, the Mexican Smalti that has been added to this month or the Christmas one day ornament mosaic workshop!  Many more can be viewed below and click here for the schedule page to get more details at the website.
Some of you have heard about the liquid tints, for tinting your mortar/thin set or grout, they are now available for sale here at SBSMA!  Yes it is true!  The same tints being used by Erin Pankratz-Smith and Kelley Knickerbocker you can get here!  You can order a set of 9 for $100.00 + s/h or singles for $11.50.  They come in 9 vibrant colors and are in a 2 oz. squeeze bottle for easy control.   Below is a picture of  the color chart for your convenience!

We had a great workshop this past month with Carol Shelkin (pictures below).  She taught her Realism workshop to 9 very enthusiastic and eager students.  So enthusiastic we got her to schedule her next workshop right away with immediate sign ups! Carol will return with her Portraiture workshop November
13th & 14th.  Click here for more details.  This workshop is filling fast, do not wait to register.
Other exciting news, I have been voted on to the Society of American Mosaic Artists board.  It is an honor and as a new board member trustee I am looking forward to sharing my experiences with the SAMA community!
Last but not least we have two spots left for the Todos Santos Mosaic Art retreat!  Once they are filled this retreat will be closed!  Next one is December 7th-13th!  Click here for the full details!
Have a great AUGUST and hope to see you soon at SBSMA!

Like a Zen Master, Tami floats among the students, helping where necessary and coaching us to perfect our works of art. I’m impressed she has remembered all our names! She shows us how to shape the ceramic pieces to best fit into spaces on our boards. H.H.

Hi Tami- I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed the mosaic workshop last weekend.  The class was fun and the outdoor setting was perfect.  I am spreading the word around town 🙂 E.S.
