SANTA BARBARA SCHOOL OF MOSAIC ART

January 2013
Greetings!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

So now that 2013 is here what is on  your new years resolutions?  Is it to learn mosaic art?  Is it to become a better mosaic artist?   To learn different mosaic art techniques?  Well all of these are possible here at Santa Barbara School of Mosaic Art.

There are so many different types of Mosaic art you can learn.  You can become skilled working with tile while creating a Table top, a Garden Sphere or a Boulder, or you can work with Mexican Smalti and learn about shading while creating a simple, beautiful image.  Or you can work with glass and create fun and unique glass fused pieces incorporating them in your mosaic.   Any and all is possible this year!

More than just learning these new styles have you ever wanted to put artistic elements into your mosaic art?  Elements such as shading, gradation, color value, composition and balance?  You may have thought you would need to take a semester long class to learn all of this.  Well here at SBSMA there is a 2 day workshop where you will learn these new skills while you create your own stained glass portrait or image mosaic.  World renowned Carol Shelkin teaches her Realistic Mosaic Art with Stained Glass with Artist Techniques.  With Carol’s fundamental and formal teachings it is absolutely the best value for your time and wallet.
We also have two new teachers visiting SBSMA this spring.  Both Laurie Mika’s Mixed Media and Erin Pankratz-Smith Everything Color are both very unique and creative styles in creating mosaic art.

SBSMA was privileged to be the cover story for the new SB paper called the Santa Barbara SentinelClick here to read the full story.

Here’s to a great 2013 may you find creativity and happiness in all you do!!

Laurie Mika

Laurie Mika is a mixed-media artist with a passion for combining and overlapping a variety of mediums creating an original style of mixed-media mosaics using handmade polymer clay tile. Laurie’s background in painting is evident in her mixed-media works influenced by medieval and Renaissance art. The gilded devotional panels of the past become secular icons imbued with personal narratives. Art and folk traditions referenced in her work derive from her travels and experiences of living abroad, (East Africa). The highly embellished surfaces, including segments of text, form sumptuous tapestries of traditional and modern materials. Like a modern-day alchemist tinkering with the ancient art of mosaics, Laurie finds magic in combining disparate elements. Laurie shares her distinct style teaching at national and internationally recognized art retreats like

ArtFest, Art Unraveled, Art and Soul and Raevn’s Nest.

She recently taught a workshop in Reims, France. Laurie is often on the move also teaching at venues across the States. Closer to home, Laurie participates in juried shows, teaches workshops and has her work in local galleries.

Erin Pankratz-Smith

As a multi-disciplined artist, Erin Pankratz-Smith has spent nearly a decade developing her skills and creating a supportive community of colleagues. With a background in dance, following training at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, Erin went on to study at the Alberta College of Art and Design. Carving a new path in the visual arts, she established her own mosaic tile business supplying both education and materials to artists across North America.

Born in Inuvik, Northwest Territories, Parnkratz-Smith has spent most of her life residing in northwestern Canada. Now married, with three children, Erin admits she has always been a highly visual individual, and sees mosaic as her current medium of expression. She considers art a practice that intersects every aspect of our existence, as a way of articulating the subjective human voice. Therefore, she expects that her art will continuously evolve, in both composition and subject.

Her most recent work “Everything Flows, Nothing Stands Still” celebrates the effect of color and the seasons, in particular the ever-present landscape of the North Saskatchewan River, which both bisects and connects the city of Edmonton. The juxtapositions of urban and rural, texture and atmosphere; all contribute to a dynamic interpretation of cultural and geographic diversity.

Carol Shelkin

Carol Shelkin is a mosaic artist who creates fine art pieces for galleries,

homes, architectural and public settings internationally. It was made clear at a young age that Carol’s life would be centered upon her passion for creating and teaching art. She eventually opened an arts-nursery school/child care where she works today. Along with her school, Carol has been teaching a variety of art mediums to adults worldwide. Gathering community and making art is a special passion and she has worked with up to 600 students at one time to complete a public mosaic.

Carol, having a successful career in painting and pottery, has been accepting commissions with mosaic work as well as being invited to show her work worldwide. She has won many honors and awards including works at Ciel Gallery, N.C. with Maestro Giulio Menossi, Italy, honoring her mosaic. Her mosaic portrait, In A Village has been displayed at The Museum of Man, San Diego during Mosaic Arts International 2009 after one year of mosaic experience. She was invited to display another portrait Fabulous Hair during Mosaic Arts International 2010 at Smith Museum of Stained Glass, Chicago, Ill., and was honored again to have another portrait on exhibition at Mosaic Arts International 2011 in Austin, Texas.

The dominant influence on Carol’s work would be the simple joy of living. She is a member of the Society of American Mosaic Artists, British Association of Mosaic Artists, Philadelphia Magic Gardens, Fleisher Art Memorial, Philadelphia Art Museum and a Juried member of The Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen.

SANTA BARBARA SCHOOL OF MOSAIC ART

December 2012
Greetings!

HAPPY 3RD ANNIVERSARY SBSMA!!

Well here it is, this happy little school is turning 3 this month!  To celebrate the first 10 people that call or email to sign up for a workshop will receive 10% off including visiting artists from near and far!  To take advantage of this special offer, go straight to the website schedule page select what your next mosaic adventure will be!

Adventure is the right word to use for the last 3 years.  I could have only dreamed the school would grow as fast as it has, but here we are with amazing visiting artists teaching, as well as a Beginner’s workshop that is sold out every month.

Learning this art is so exciting and so challenging.  I feel as a teacher it is so important to convey to students that leaning mosaic art is really a process.  Each workshop has so much to offer and there is always so much to absorb, so whether you walk away with a finished piece or one to continue outside the workshop, what is most important is you learned the skills and techniques that each teacher can share with you so your artistic talents can grow.

SANTA BARBARA SCHOOL OF MOSAIC ART

November 2012
Greetings!

Fall is in the air.  Well sort of….here in SB we are having an end of year heat wave.  Not that I mind a little warm weather but it’s time to put on the sweaters, warm boots and start feeling like there is a chill in the air.

So it would also make sense to want to fire up the glass kiln and start firing some glass.  With that said there is a very special workshop coming up in December.

The Glass Fusing and mosaic workshop on December 15th & 16th with visiting artist and teacher Sue Baldwin. This will be an opportunity to learn to create glass fusions then incorporate them into a mosaic.  The workshop is designed for beginners to advanced.  Students will learn how to cut the glass and what are the best ways to create fusions for their mosaics.  Then using vitreous glass students will complete their piece(s).  This workshop will have different substrates for an opportunity to make holiday gifts for loved ones.

Laurie shares her distinct style teaching at national and internationally recognized art retreats like ArtFest, Art Unraveled, Art and Soul and Raevn’s Nest.

SANTA BARBARA SCHOOL OF MOSAIC ART

October 2012
Greetings!

Did I really just type October 2012?  How is it possible?  Here we are moving into the end of the year.  WOW! What a year it has been.
It has been so wonderful to meet so many new students and see returning ones as well.
With an array of visiting artists, students are finding more and more reasons to come to SBSMA and try new and different styles of mosaic art.
In September Susan Crocenzi blessed us with her colorful and happy polymer clay and tempered glass workshop.  What a chock full and fun workshop.  She promises to come back next year if you missed it.  Scroll down to see pictures from the workshop.
Coming in December we will have Sue Baldwin teaching the best two in one workshop, Glass fusing and mosaics.  This is a great workshop with so much to learn and create.
This coming year will be no different.  In addition to the regular teachers and workshops there will be new ones added to the schedule.
In March we will have two new teachers to SBSMA, first will be Erin Pankratz-Smith, March 9-10, teaching “everything color” including color gradation, color blocking and more.  Next we will have Laurie Mika, March 23-24, teaching a mixed media style using a triptych substrate.  Both of these ladies come with so much talent and enthusiasm it will be hard to keep it all contained.
Also returning to SBSMA April 6-8 is Carol Shelkin.  This will be a three day create your own workshop style.  You will learn to do either portrait or still life image.
If any of this sounds interesting to you, or you have always wanted to try a new form of mosaic don’t hesitate to sign up, these workshops will sell out!
If you are looking to find a workshop that suits you sooner than next spring there are many more, just check the website schedule page to see what is coming up!

SANTA BARBARA SCHOOL OF MOSAIC ART

September 2012
Greetings!

It is so important we all take time to do the things we love.  In our busy fast paced lives it is so easy to get caught up in the day to day events that we don’t take the time to do something that truly makes us happy.  A long time ago I learned how to make mosaic art, it is truly my passion.  If mosaic art is something you have always wanted to try, then do it.  If you have tried it once or twice and want to get better at it, or try a new style, then do it.  We hear it all the time, “life is short” enjoy it while you can!  Santa Barbara School of Mosaic Art is here to teach, guide and make creating mosaic art truly enjoyable.  There are some incredible of visiting artists scheduled through out the year here at SBSMA.  There are also workshops like the Table top and Boulder/Garden sphere that are scheduled regularly.  Below is a list of upcoming workshops, there are also many more on the website schedule page.  There is also LAB if you want to work during the week, as well as private lessons if that fits your schedule better.  However it works for you, SBSMA is here to be a part of making your life even that much more fulfilling……
