SANTA BARBARA SCHOOL OF MOSAIC ART

August 2012
Greetings!

This past weekend I taught a sold out Beginner workshop to a great group of people.  I am always so impressed with the hard work and dedication students put into their pieces and the joy they have creating mosaic art.  Whether it is a beginner piece or advanced Mexican Smalti there is something for everyone to learn and feel gratified.  Even I get the opportunity to learn from the students.  Over this weekend one of my students, a wonderfully spirited 81 year old woman named Sylvia taught me a thing or two.    Sylvia is about to have a one woman art show in her hometown of Lompoc, Ca.. She is a painter and has 25 paintings, in water colors and acrylics, about to be shown at Lompoc museum starting October 5th for one month.  To me that is astonishing but to her it is just another busy day.  I admire her and am inspired by her, to keep creating my art, sharing my knowledge and grateful to all the wonderful students that show up every week wanting to learn how to make mosaic art!
This week SBSMA will be hosting one of the best mosaic artists in
the business.  Carol Shelkin will teach her 2 1/2 day Portraiture mosaics workshop, combining color balance, shading, layout, design and glass cutting techniques.  Stay tuned for pictures and visit the Santa Barbara School of Mosaic Art Facebook page for more updates.

Tami’s latest installation from All Cracked Up Mosaics

Below is a picture of my latest installation.  The lizard is approximately 8 sq. ft done in Mexican smalti, gold smalti and stained glass.   This lizard is now living on the shower wall of a wonderful couple’s home here in Santa Barbara.   The installation of the lizard went flawlessly due to general contractor Eric Knight.  If it were not for Eric and his incredible attention to detail I would not have been able to have had such an effortless time getting the lizard to it’s final spot.  Eric did an incredible job on both the bathroom and bedroom of this home remodel.  I was lucky enough to be part of another amazing project here in SB.  Thank you Eric!

  Lizard1

“Absolutely love it, Tami!  The colors are exactly what I was hoping for, kind of mysterious and other-worldly.  I’m imagining this animal as something wild and dangerous set against the order and mathematical certainty of the Mexican tile design that will encircle it.  You’re spinning magic.”

Client’s quote during the process….

SANTA BARBARA SCHOOL OF MOSAIC ART

June 2012
Greetings!

Welcome to the June 2012 issue of SBSMA newsletter.  Normally I would go on about the great weather, how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful place and how I can’t believe it’s June already.  But to be honest there is so much going on at SBSMA let’s just get down to business.

As I have shared in the past couple of months the visiting artists workshops are an opportunity not to be missed.   Margo Anton’s Mosaic Textures in less than two weeks (June 15-17) is almost full as well as Susan Crocenzi’s Polymer clay and Tempered glass September 7th-9th.  As for Carol Shelkin’s Mosaic Portraiture if you are available on the weekdays of August 7 & 8 (Tuesday/Wednesday) and you want to take your mosaic skills as well as skills as an artist to a new level don’t miss this workshop.  Details for all these workshops and more can be found on the SBSMA website schedule page.  www.santabarbaraschoolofmosaicart.com

SBSMA is now offering KIDS CAMP!  Yep that’s right mosaic art for kids this summer.  The first one June 18/20/22 is already full but there are two more weeks you can get your kids into.  The week of July 9th and the week of August 13th.  The KIDS CAMP is a three day MWF 9a-12:30p day camp where kids  between the ages of 7-14 can have an opportunity to make 2-3 projects, learn basic mosaic skills and feel gratified having created mosaic art in a fun and safe atmosphere.  The fee is $120.00/child.  There are more details on the website.

My latest installation is now complete.  Last month I finished a 22′ sq. ft. installation of my interpretation of Gustav Klimt’s “The Tree of Life”.  This piece was created using stained glass, gold smalti and glass fusions.  There are a few pictures below and more can be found on my website at www.allcrackedupmosaics.com.  Please feel free to visit and see how the process unfolded.

SANTA BARBARA SCHOOL OF MOSAIC ART

May 2012
Greetings!

One of the best parts of being an artist is exploration.  Being able to tap the senses and express them in an art form.  As I write this newsletter I am in New Orleans.  It is truly one of the best places in the world to enjoy history, food, music and art, including mosaic art.  I have had the opportunity to visit a couple places that have mosaic art installations by mosaic artist Laurel True.  She is one of my greatest inspirations and mentors.  I believe having artistic inspiration is so important, no matter where or who it comes from.  As I mentioned in last months news letter the visiting artists coming to SBSMA are also so inspiring with their different talents and unique techniques.

As you learn the art of mosaics it is extremely valuable to expose yourself to a variety of mediums to find your sense of style and what materials you like to work with.  The SBSMA has filled the spring and summer season with a world class mix of artists in an effort to explore the different materials and techniques that make the world of mosaics so inspiring.

Pick from the exciting class list below and sign up today to start your journey towards new techniques and success as a student.  Feel free to take as many classes as you would like.  Space for each workshop is limited and some classes are close to full already.

Margo Anton

Margo Anton has been a professional mosaic artist since 2004, operating under the name of Minerva Mosaics. She has exhibited her work at two past SAMA conferences, as well as in various exhibitions in her native Canada. Margo has also spoken both locally and internationally on mosaic art. Her mosaic journey began with a fascination in glass and tile, and has since moved on to a more eclectic mix of materials. In February 2009, Margo began a blog wherein she creates a small scale mixed media mosaic four or five days a week. In addition to working on this “Mosaic A Day” project, Margo also works on larger fine art mosaics, commissions, and installations. She teaches adult mosaic workshops throughout the year, with skill levels ranging from beginner to advanced.

Kelley Knickerbocker

Kelley came to mosaic art in the summer of 2005 after decades of working in many other artistic mediums (leaded glass, canvas floorcloths, calligraphy, quilting). Art had been a lifelong sideline, and she had a serious jones for an artistic expression that could translate into a creative career. She found it during a week-long mosaic intensive at the Institute of Mosaic Art in Oakland, CA, and hasn’t looked back.

In 2006, after a year of mosaic technique and installation studies with professionals across the U.S., Kelley founded her Seattle studio, Rivenworks Mosaics, from which she designs, fabricates and installs custom architectural mosaic works for residential, commercial, and public art clients.

Kelley works in multiple mediums for her architectural clients, but in her personal work she returns again and again to glass for exploration and play. The visual depth and light-handling properties of glass, as well as its diverse palette of colors, offer up endless possibilities for dimensional exploration, from which she has developed her signature stacked glass mosaic technique.

Kelley’s fine art mosaic panels have been accepted to national and international juried exhibitions, and many reside in private collections. She is an active member of the Society of American Mosaic Artists, and teaches her Radical Dimensions stacked glass mosaic workshops throughout the U.S. and Canada, See more of Kelley’s work at

Carol Shelkin

Carol Shelkin is a mosaic artist who creates fine art pieces for galleries, homes, architectural and public settings internationally. It was made clear at a young age that Carol’s life would be centered upon her passion for creating and teaching art. Carol continued her studies at Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Fleisher Art Memorial, and Philadelphia College of Art. She eventually opened an arts-nursery school/child care where she works today. Along with her school, Carol has been teaching a variety of art mediums to adults worldwide. Gathering community and making art is a special passion and she has worked with up to 600 students at one time to complete a public mosaic.

Carol, having a successful career in painting and pottery, has been accepting commissions with mosaic work as well as being invited to show her work worldwide. She has won many honors and awards including works at Ciel Gallery, N.C. with Maestro Giulio Menossi, Italy, honoring her mosaic. Her mosaic portrait, In A Village has been displayed at The Museum of Man, San Diego during Mosaic Arts International 2009 after one year of mosaic experience. She was invited to display another portrait Fabulous Hair during Mosaic Arts International 2010 at Smith Museum of Stained Glass, Chicago, Ill., and was honored again to have another portrait on exhibition at Mosaic Arts International 2011 in Austin, Texas.

The dominant influence on Carol’s work would be the simple joy of living. She is a member of the Society of American Mosaic Artists, British Association of Mosaic Artists, Philadelphia Magic Gardens, Fleisher Art Memorial, Philadelphia Art Museum and a Juried member of The Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen.

SBSMA is also experiencing new growth this spring.  Last month I mentioned in the newsletter the possibility of new visiting artists, well they are BOOKED!!!

There is even  local Santa Barbara artist, Betsy Gallery, teaching the Mexican Smalti workshop.  With only a few spots left and less than 2 weeks away, this workshop you don’t want to miss!

Scroll down to see pictures and read a bio on each of these artists booked so far, there will be more to come as the rest of the year unfolds.

SANTA BARBARA SCHOOL OF MOSAIC ART

March 2012
Greetings!

I have just returned from the annual SAMA conference (Society of American Mosaic Artists) in Lexington, Kentucky.  What a great conference.  It is always great to get together with other mosaic artisits and share techniques, knowledge and the love of the art.  I also met with many other teachers.  It was so great to hear how many would like to come teach at the Santa Barbara School of Mosaic Art.  Visiting artists is a great way for you the student to expand your knowledge and skills as mosaic artists.  Last month the sold out workshop of visiting artist Martin Cheek  was an incredible experience.  Martin’s lectures explained in simple English so many techniques while his hands on assistance raised the level of every student in that workshop.  With that kind of success it is exciting to announce a list of some  of the visiting artists coming to SBSMA in the future plus more to be added soon:

(click on their name to get to their website to learn more)

*Margo Anton

*Carol Shelkin

*Deb Aldo

*Kelley Knickerbocker

It is so exciting to see the interest and excitement of mosaic art spread.  I have been a mosaic artist for over 15 years and to watch new students learn this art and work hard to achieve great work is a gratifying experience.  Please feel free to email me what kind of mosaic art you would like to learn.  I love to get feedback and see where we can expand our knowledge and skills as artists and students!

SANTA BARBARA SCHOOL OF MOSAIC ART

February 2012
Greetings!

I am happy to report February has arrived and SBSMA could not be doing better.  There have been some really great new workshops added.  New visiting artists and increased LAB hours.  January was a great month with new and returning students making Table tops, Pet portraits and Beginner 12″x12″ projects.  The latest visiting artists to be added to the  schedule are Sue Baldwin with glass fusing and mosaics in May and Susan Crocenzi with polymer clay and tempered glass in September.  Both workshops are starting to fill up so take a look at the website schedule for more details and to sign up!

Other exciting news at SBSMA:

  • Martin Cheek workshop  is SOLD OUT for the weekend but still openings during the week!
  • SBSMA is now the proud owner of a brand new Skutt glass kiln
  • Looking forward to attending the SAMA conference in Lexington, KY.

I have had the privilege of meeting and working with some great new students in the last two years and watching their talent grow.  It has also been awesome to get to know some very talented artists as well.  Santa Barbara has a wealth of artists from many mediums but within the mosaic medium there are only a few.  At the end of this news letter please take a minute to read about my good friend and great artist Christine Brallier.

It has been so great to meet so many mosaic artists over the years.  Whether at the SAMA conference or right in my own back yard.  A couple years ago I was contacted by a local mosaic artist, Christine Brallier.  Christine is a very accomplished mosaic artist with a great style and attention to detail.  Over the last two years we have shared our love for mosaics and helped each other out with opinions, critiques and installations.  Christine’s work has been shown all over the country and has won numerous awards.  Over the last two years Christine has been creating a mosaic illustrated book that is due out this holiday season.   As well as this year she has been selected by the Society of American Mosaic Artists to design the mosaic that will be created in 3 days at the SAMA conference.  She designed a beautiful 3 panel piece, a triptych,  that will be installed at a non-profit called “The Nest -the center for women, children and families” in Lexington, KY.   It has been so great to see the process unfold and will be awesome to watch the SAMA conference members create this mosaic.   You can see the design at SAMA mosaic marathon Also check out Christine’s website for more pictures and details about her work at cbmosaics.com

  • Table Top, the first workshop of the year is sold out
  • The Beginner workshop is sold out and
  • The Pet Portrait workshop is almost sold out

As you can see workshops fill up quickly with everyone’s excitement of creating mosaic art pieces.  There is so much excitement about the Martin Cheek glass mosaic workshop that there are only 2 spots left for the weekend of February 25th & 26th.

However, there are so many students who have expressed a desire to learn with Martin that he has agreed to teach the same workshop on Thursday and Friday,  February 23 and 24th.  If you are interested in those days please email or call soon as we expect that workshop to fill up as well.  There are many other workshops that are available in the coming weeks and months.  Go to www.santabarbaraschoolofmosaicart.com  schedule page to see a full list of upcoming workshops.

Again I want to express my gratitude to all of my students….if it weren’t for your interest and love for mosaics Santa Barbara School of Mosaic Art would not exist.  Here’s to an amazing 2012!!

LAB has been a very busy place this last year!  Laurel is the third student I would like to take a minute and profile.  Laurel has a very unique style of mosaic art and is very attracted to 3D mosaic.  You will see much of her work has found objects such as jewelery or religious items placed inside or right on top of her grouted pieces.

Laurel’s Mosaic Art Work

Laurel has been LAB regular for almost two  years and has shown such incredible growth in her work. Here are just a few of the pieces she has created.

SBSMA Happenings

from October 11th, 2014

Today I am going over the schedule and getting some feedback from students for upcoming workshops.  I am always open to learning about what the students here at SBSMA would like to learn.  There are so many styles of mosaic art.  There are incredible teachers from all over the world that have and will come teach here at SBSMA.   I consider this school a boutique style school.  Meaning workshops can be altered and custom designed to meet students needs.  Nothing is set in stone here and the main goal is each student that comes to Santa Barbara School of Mosaic Art has a great experience learning new techniques and skills to take into their mosaic practice….so please feel free to email me tami@allcrackedupmosaics.com and let me know what attracts you to mosaics and what you would like to learn!!

I am here to tell you about all the latest happenings at Santa Barbara School of Mosaic Art.
Santa Barbara School of Mosaic Art offers great mosaic workshops, open studio time better known as LAB and incredible visiting artists.

There is also the Todos Santos Mosaic Art Retreat.  The next retreat departs December 7th-13th, for the trip of a lifetime.  Incredible food, great shopping and of course creative mosaic expression.

Working in mosaic art can be a very therapeutic experience and it is a great way to give yourself a chance to create something even if you have little to no experience. Contact Tami at 805.703.4291 to set up your time to come to SBSMA~

Kelley Knickerbocker Strata Various workshop

from October 26th, 2014

aaakelley sample

Today is the final day of the Kelley Knickerbocker Strata Various workshop.  What a great success.  Each student made their own sample boards.  Learning to work with tinted mortar and self made mesh/mortar substrates.  Students worked quickly to create the substrates that they would then create sample boards using only  black/white tesserae in a variety of materials.  Learning to cut different textures, working with setting them to create a conversation between the tesserae and the space between them.  Here are 2 unedited quick videos of Kelley explaining how the different shapes can be set and why!  I highly recommend this workshop and anything else Kelley has to offer.  She is a valuable wealth of knowledge and incredible talent in our mosaic community
